Acne: Face Map

Acne is a chronic skin condition that occurs when the hair follicles clog up with oil and dead skin cells. The acne-causing bacteriais called Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes). It lives on the skin and contributes to the infection of pimples, which causes swelling. The whiteheads, blackheads and pimples, usually appear on the face, chest, upper back and shoulders.

If you have acne, you are not alone… acne is the most common skin condition!

Acne often occurs during puberty as a result of hormonal changes. These hormones stimulate the sebaceous glands to make more sebum. The glands can become overactive. When there is too much sebum, that oil clogs the pores and leads to acne.

In older adults, severe acne may signal an underlying disease.
